London Cartoon Protesters Jailed for a Total of 22 Years

LONDON, 19 July 2007 — Four young British Muslims were yesterday jailed for a total of 22 years at the Old Bailey for their role in a protest outside the Danish Embassy in Sloane Street on Feb. 3, 2006 against cartoons depicting and satirizing the Prophet Muhammed.
Website designer Mizanur Rahman, 24, of Palmers Green; British Telecoms IT technician Umran Javed, 27, from Birmingham; and Abdul Muhid, 24, of Whitechapel were each jailed for six years for soliciting to murder after urging the crowd or carrying placards with threats, including “Bomb Bomb UK”; “Be prepared for the real holocaust”; “Osama is on his way”; and referring to British soldiers in Iraq: “We want to see their blood running in the streets of Baghdad and them coming home in body bags.”
A fourth man, Abdul Saleem, 32, from Poplar in east London, was jailed for four years on a single charge of stirring up racial hatred at the protest in February 2006.
The sentences were handed out as a dozen or so supporters of the men sat in the public gallery. Outside the court building, however, there were some 50 or so ‘Islamist’ demonstrators, many of them women in full black burkas covered from head to toe. The latter’s venom in their message of hate against the British establishment could not have been more evident. They waved placards reading: “British Police Go to Hell” and “Muslims Under Siege.”
But the warning to the extremists of all colors and creed who want to spread messages of hate was loud and clear from Sir Ken Macdonald, director of public prosecutions: “Terrorism attacks our way of life and incitement can make a very real contribution to it. We shall continue to take incitement very seriously and prosecute it robustly where there is enough evidence for us to do so.”
The Common Serjeant of London, Judge Brian Barker, said the words of the four convicted had been designed to encourage murder and terrorism; and that none of the placards or speeches mention the cartoons, which had never been published in the British media. “Everybody is entitled to freedom and protection under the law and no one is entitled to urge the perverted use of ideology to propagate destruction, distress and death,” he declared.
“The freedoms of speech and assembly have long been jealously guarded by our laws, but with freedom comes respect and responsibility — none of which was demonstrated by you and the hardcore of your fellow protesters, demonstrating in February last year. Six months after the London bombings you subjected the multicultural citizens of London to a constant barrage of hatred and intolerance through your thoroughly offensive placards and speeches by three of you,” the judge added.
The convictions arose from the aftermath of an incident when about 300 protesters marched from the Central London Mosque in Regent’s Park to the Danish Embassy in February last year after cartoons satirizing the Prophet Muhammad were published in newspapers in Denmark and other European countries.
The men denied harboring extremist views and said they were simply following others rather than leading the protests.
Meanhwile, in another development yesterday, three Muslim men were arrested by Greater Manchester Police counter-terrorism officers under terrorism laws after receiving information about a “potential threat.” The three are being held at a police station in the Stockport Road district of Longsight, Manchester. A fourth man was detained under immigration laws.

network of radical, anti-U.S. Islamic centers

Hundreds of Islamic centers in the United States have become a hot-bed of extremist activity; they promote violence, terrorism and hatred against America.

“Our initial investigation has concluded there are between 400 to 500 radical Islamic centers in the U.S.,” said David Gaubatz, the director of counterintelligence and counterterrorism for the Society of Americans for National Existence. “In those places, they preach an extreme version of Islam that says America and the West is the enemy. They espouse violence, hatred and the need for terrorism.”

Gaubatz is a former senior U.S. intelligence official, who now works for the Mapping Shari’a in America Project (www.mappingsharia.com), which is supported by SANE, a national non-profit group devoted to investigating the 2,300 Islamic centers in the U.S. for extremist activity.

Gaubatz and his investigators are currently active and will soon form a team of about 12. They pose as people interested in converting to Islam or who are current Muslims. Their goal is to infiltrate mosques and Muslim centers. Recently, he and his team penetrated the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, located in Falls Church, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Sporting a beard and Muslim dress, Gaubatz said he went on May 18 to the center, pretending to be an American interested in becoming a convert to Islam. He discovered the center espoused terrorism and jihad against America.

“They are teaching what they call Jihad Qital, which means physical jihad,” Gaubatz said. “They’re teaching violence and hatred of the United States.”

Gaubatz said that he met the two primary clerics at Dar Al-Hijrah, Imam Shaker Elsayed and Imam Johari Abdulmalik. Both men have been trained in Saudi Arabia. He says another key individual is Yusef Estes, an informal senior leader at the center and an internationally influential Muslim scholar who was trained in Saudi Arabia.

“They put me through the process of learning their faith and ideology,” Gaubatz said. “They felt close to me and they gave me literature and CDs. They told me to study. The literature is very Jihad Qital.”

He said that the Islamic center has deep ties to Saudi Arabia and espouses Wahhabism, a virulent and puritanical version of Islam.

“Many members of the mosque provided me literature to study. Most of the literature they gave me was from Saudi Arabia,” he said. “Their literature preaches that America and the West are decadent and evil, and that Muslims have a moral duty to engage in violence against the infidels.”

Gaubatz says that Dar Al-Hijrah and other radical Islamic centers in the U.S. are funded by Saudi Arabia, which is the primary sponsor of the Wahhabist brand of Islam.

“The ultimate goal for those at Dar Al-Hijrah is to instill Sharia law in the U.S. and have America adhere to the Islamic faith,” he said. “They want America to be an Islamic state.”

Gaubatz said that the imams at the center encouraged him to read the works of their “friends”—some of whom have been convicted for terrorism-related activities. According to Gaubatz, one of those “friends” he was encouraged to read is Ali Al-Tamimi, a radical Islamist author, who was convicted of inciting terrorism in connection with the Virginia Jihad Network.

Al-Tamimi was born and raised in the U.S., and then as a teenager went to Saudi Arabia to study Islam. He lectured often at the Center for Islamic Information and Education in Falls Church, Virginia. He was a founding member of the center, which is also known as Dar al-Arqam.

The Virginia Jihad Network was a group of radical Islamists who were charged with engaging in terrorist plots. Nine members of the group were convicted of using and possessing various weapons, rocket-propelled grenades and explosives.

Al-Tamimi was later convicted of being the spiritual leader of the group and of having encouraged them to wage Jihad on the U.S.

Gaubatz maintains that he and his team of field workers at the Mapping Shari’a in America Project are not only focusing on major metropolitan areas. Although there is plenty of Islamist activity in cities such as Detroit, Dearborn, Michigan and Washington, he says radical Muslims are also establishing education and religious centers in small towns.

“They’re branching out and teaching the Jihadist ideology in small towns across America, especially in rural areas in places like Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina,” Gaubatz said.

He says that a terrorist atrocity on U.S. soil similar to what happened on 9/11 is inevitable unless Americans take decisive measures.

“If we let our guard down, another 9/11—maybe even something worse—is going to happen again,” he said. “We need to be proactive rather than reactive.”

Gaubatz says that his investigative team is composed of individuals of various faiths, whose goal is to protect the American homeland from Islamic extremism.

“We have a team consisting of Christians, Jews and Muslims—there are several Muslims, in fact, on our team—who go undercover and try to penetrate radical mosques in this country,” he said. “This is not about being anti-Muslim. It is about being anti-extremism, anti-Jihadism and anti-terrorism.

“Our mission is to get at the truth—to find out the truth about what’s really going on in our country.”

MIAMI — Antiterrorism strategists, including those in the White House, have wrongly tended to write off the consequences of a radiological “dirty bomb” attack as insignificant, a former homeland security adviser to President George W. Bush said yesterday (see GSN, June 12).

Richard Falkenrath, who now heads the New York City Police Department’s counterterrorism division, said the detonation of even a relatively simple and small dirty bomb in a dense city could be a “nightmare scenario.”

Terrorists are far more likely to obtain and use a radiological weapon than an improvised nuclear device, which Falkenrath said would produce the “highest consequence attack we can imagine” but remains a low probability threat.

Materials for a radiological dispersal device — a conventional bomb mixed with radioactive material — “are far more accessible. The weapon is far simpler to construct,” Falkenrath said, speaking at an international conference on the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (see GSN, July 17, 2006). “These have a much higher probability of occurring in an American city.”

Still, Falkenrath said his former colleagues at Harvard University and at the White House have tended to discount the threat of such an attack.

They have argued that a conventional explosion is unlikely to cause many casualties and the physical effects of the radiation on the surrounding population could likely be managed. “So goes the reasoning,” he said, countering that such thinking misses the problem associated with dirty bombs.

“This is a potentially catastrophic threat even if the immediate death count is comparable to a conventional explosive,” Falkenrath said. The real threat of a dirty bomb is “area denial through contamination.”

Not much radiation would be needed to render an urban area uninhabitable based on government assessments, he said.

“Those thresholds are rather low,” he said. “You add on top of that the public perception, the fear engendered by radiation and anything that will make a Geiger counter tick and you have the potential to essentially lose a city block or lose a transit hub.”

In the aftermath, it might not be as a simple as hosing down the sidewalk and decontaminating the area. Of the nine radiological materials generally considered of concern for use in dirty bombs, at least one can bond with concrete and other building materials.

Cesium 137, a radioactive alkali metal used in industry and medicine, could form chemical bonds with the infrastructure of the city itself. “You can’t just rinse it off. You have to tear it down and rebuild it,” Falkenrath said.

Given the density of New York and the limited redundancy in its transit system, losing one block or one link in the network, a tunnel for instance, could be devastating even if there is no loss of life.

“If we lose one of them, if it is uninhabitable and we have to wall it off and rebuild it, it is a nightmare scenario for us,” he said. “We don’t have the luxury of writing off the higher probability, lower consequence threats as Washington occasionally will.”

Misplaced Funding From Washington

While criticizing the intense focus on Capitol Hill on scanning shipping containers for radiation, Falkenrath called for Congress to preserve funding for a pilot program designed to surround New York City with the same detection technology being deployed at U.S. ports.

The White House’s proposed fiscal 2008 budget called for the Securing the Cities initiative to receive $40 million in funding to continue exploring the possibility of deploying radiation detection equipment in and around urban areas (see GSN, April 2).

A preliminary spending plan approved by the House Appropriations Homeland Subcommittee, however, cuts that funding in half.

“It would be real shame if Congress shortchanged this promising initiative and New York City again,” Falkenrath said.

In New York, a deployed network of radiation detectors could alert officials to a van or a truck carrying a nuclear or radiological device, a delivery system that Falkenrath sees as more likely than a metal shipping crate being off-loaded on Staten Island.

In a van or a truck, “it’s real easy to have plenty of payload, it blends into the background perfectly and you’re not off-site … at an industrial complex. You’re right downtown where everyone works,” he said. “That’s the delivery vehicle we’re worried about most.”

Rather than focusing on detecting radiation in trucks or vans on city streets, or worrying about general aviation planes carrying devices or small seagoing vessels, “it seems to me Washington and the United States broadly is fixated on one particular delivery system for reasons I don’t fully understand,” Falkenrath said. “They seem fixated on international shipping containers, and I don’t know why.”

Such a delivery vehicle is not particularly attractive from a terrorist point of view, he said (see GSN, May 25).

FBI warns colleges to watch for spies

The head of the FBI's Boston office is warning the region's top universities to be on the lookout for foreign spies or potential terrorists who might be trying to steal unclassified, yet sensitive, research.

FBI agents met recently with officials at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Massachusetts and other schools to train professors, students and security staff on how to recognize anyone who might be trying to exploit research, Special Agent in Charge Warren Bamford said.

More visits are scheduled as part of a larger nationwide program, he said.

Bamford stressed that the FBI is not seeking to censor information or stop the free flow of information, just raise awareness.

"The academic community is designed to be open, and we just have to make the community aware," he said.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute President Dennis Berkey said the FBI told researchers to protect laptops, especially in foreign countries, and to be wary about who contacts them about their work.

"The general point was, if there is unnatural or unexplained interest in your research and you're nervous about it, here's how to be in touch with us," Berkey said. He said WPI already takes precautions to protect research.

Boston College will probably follow some of the FBI's advice, spokesman Kevin Shea said.

"Boston College was very appreciative of their outreach," Shea said.

John Reinstein, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, expressed reservations about the program, warning that there could be a chilling effect on students or researchers.

"Are you going to ask all the questions you want to ask if someone is out there taking notes and reporting to the FBI that you asked the question which they perceived as suspicious?" Reinstein said.

MONTREAL (CP) - Police are investigating a fire at a Jewish summer camp north of Montreal that destroyed one of its residences.

No one was injured in the blaze in Val-David in the Laurentian mountains.

Investigators said Tuesday they have yet to determine whether the fire was deliberately set, but say they have several clues that suggest arson.

"The investigators... know for sure it's a suspicious fire, but we cannot say right now if it's an arson," said Quebec provincial police spokeswoman Isabelle Gendron.

Adding to their suspicions, Gendron said the summer camp was the site of a smaller fire last Saturday.

"At that time there was not much damage, but with the fire that occurred last night there is nothing left," she said.

Investigators believe someone broke into one of the camp's buildings over the weekend, prior to the first fire.

Val-David is about a one-hour drive from Montreal and is the site of several summer camps for Orthodox and Hasidic Jews.

POINT : The PA Charter Must be Changed. It still calls for the destruction of Israel, just as the Hamas Charter does.

POINT : Israel is a reestablishment of the Jewish State Jews have lived in and identified with this land for thousands of years. The Old Testament, New Testament and Koran all refer to this area as the land of the Jews. Even if one is not religious, these old documents are another way to show that Jews are indigenous to Israel and the surrounding area.

POINT : The Definition of Zionism: If you believe that Jews have a right to self-determination and to their own country in the area that is ancient Israel where they have maintained a presence for thousands of years, then you are a Zionist. Most Jews are Zionists, as are many non-Jews.
