What Is "Extremist?"

7 Adar 5769

YNET: What Is "Extremist?"
I have A LOT of acquaintances, yet very few friends. I consider Yo'el Meltzer one of them. I hope my saying so publicly will not hurt his writing career. Yo'el has a certain knack for saying it like it is, reaching a relatively wide audience, yet without compromising principles.

The above link is to YNET, which published this article first and which has already hosted some lively debate on it. See my comments #20 and #25. If you prefer Arutz 7, you can click here.

As coalition talks heat up, the phrase "extremist coalition" is frequently heard. At times, it is Kadima stating that they will not join an "extremist coalition", while at other times it is the leadership of the Likud saying they will form a right-wing coalition, albeit not an "extremist" one. With the term being bantered about so regularly, perhaps it should be clarified what exactly this term means.

For starters, according to one dictionary, "extremist" means "one who advocates or resorts to measures beyond the norm." Hence, right from the start, it should be clear that "extremist" is a relative term. Moreover, something is determined as extremist only in relation to its position vis-a-vis the "norm" (which, of course, is also a relative term). Thus, for example, we find that according to this definition, Zeev Jabotinsky's frantic pleas in the 1930s to European Jewry "to liquidate the exile before the exile liquidates you," would certainly be considered extremist, since the majority of European Jewry (the "norm") did not agree with Jabotinsky's prediction. Nonetheless, history proved that Jabotinsky was unfortunately correct, while the majority (the "norm") was clearly wrong.

This is just one example of many to show that what occasionally is considered an extremist approach is, in retrospect, correct, while what is considered the norm is, in retrospect, mistaken. Of course, this is not a fixed law and sometimes the opposite is true. What is important, however, is to understand that these terms are purely subjective and relative. Thus, whoever designates an idea or approach as "extremist", and by default what is the norm, is doing so from his own personal, subjective point of view and world outlook. This is an important point that should be kept in mind when confronted by such terms.

A much healthier approach would be if public officials would clearly state what they consider extremist in another party, and why, and in the process clarify what is their own unique point of view and world outlook. Thus, for example, if Kadima or Likud were to state why they believe that Yisrael Beiteinu's calling for citizenship based on loyalty is extremist, perhaps Yisrael Beiteinu would respond with their own reasoning of why they believe that such a position is legitimate and required. Whatever the outcome of such a dialogue would be, at the very least the public would be presented with some clear ideas of what our public officials actually believe in, rather than being fed the usual cliches.

Turning to another dictionary, we find that "extremism" is "any political theory favoring uncompromising policies." Thus, for example, based on this definition Kadima could easily claim that HaIchud HaLeumi has an extremist point of view, since they are 100% opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state in any shape or size, in any part of the Land of Israel. In other words, they are totally uncompromising and therefore extremist. However, similar to the case above, if Kadima would only state this clearly, rather than talking in general terms about an "extremist coalition", perhaps some genuine public dialogue would ensue.

In such a scenario, HaIchud HaLeumi might respond by saying that Kadima's determination to establish a Palestinian state in the majority of Judea and Samaria - despite the experience of missile attacks from Lebanon and Gaza during the past few years and despite the direct threat that such a state would pose against Tel Aviv and Jerusalem - is not only foolish, but it is also extremist, due to Kadima's uncompromising commitment to bring such a policy to fruition. Or perhaps they would respond by explaining in an intelligent way that from a Jewish perspective their position is actually the norm, while everything else should be viewed relative to their position.

The debates could go on and on, but the point here is that rather than continuing to spend endless time delegitimizing and vilifying other parties who have different points of view, the time has come for Israeli pubic officials to start engaging in real discussions based upon actual ideas and approaches, rather than mere sound bites and cliches such as "extremist". The Israeli public deserves this from their elected officials.

Confusion On The Right

5 Shevat 5769

A7: "Confusion On The Right"
Apparently, YNET left out a sentence, when it published this article. So, I have changed the link to the Arutz 7 (Israel National News) version which published the article in its entirety. The sentence in question is marked in red.

Yoel Meltzer
3 Shevat 5796/January 28, 2009

National Union PartyFollowing the disengagement from Gaza in the summer of 2005 and the complete negligence on behalf of the government to properly handle the forced evacuees, the subsequent war in Lebanon one year later, the endless missiles fired upon the south and the recent war in Gaza, many good-minded Israelis are clearly against the establishment of a Palestinian state, in any shape or size, in Judea and Samaria.

The direct threat that such a state would impose against Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as these two large population centers become incredibly vulnerable to missile attacks, is quite obvious. In addition, in light of the disastrous handling of the disengagement refugees, it is inconceivable to think that Israel would succeed with the much larger Jewish population currently residing in Judea and Samaria.

However, despite the opposition of many Israelis to the “two-state solution,” it is quite clear and understandable that the United States has a different agenda. As a result of both an economy in disarray and widespread dissatisfaction with the continued participation of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, the new president will likely do his utmost to bring the American troops back home and “turn inward” in order to deal with the faltering economy.

It is also just as clear that Israel will likely be required, as usual, to “pay the price” for American appeasement with the various Arab and Muslim countries. Moreover, this is not something that theoretically might happen a few years down the road, but rather, something which will most likely happen within the coming year. Once again, from an American perspective this is quite clear and understandable, since America needs to do what it must do in order to preserve its teetering empire.

Just as clear, however, is the relentless and intense pressure that will be applied to Israel within the coming year in order to agree to the creation of a Palestinian state in either all or part of a Jewish-free (or somewhat Jewish-free) Judea and Samaria.

Don’t be fooled
Having said all this, and in light of the quickly approaching national elections, it is truly amazing to see that the confusion on the Right is once again rearing its all too familiar head. Although there are several political parties that define themselves as “national” or “right-wing” - Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu, The Jewish Home, The National Union – only one of these parties says, in clear and straightforward terms, that it is 100% opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state, in any shape or size, in any part of the Land of Israel.

This party, The National Union, speaks clearly and directly with a real Jewish soul without worrying about political correctness. Moreover, its message, which is correct from a security perspective, is correct from a Jewish perspective as well. On the other hand the Likud, including several of its key members who recently cried “we told you Gaza would turn into Hamastan”(while conveniently forgetting to mention that these same key members voted in favor of the disengagement!), speaks about a demilitarized Palestinian state with Israel controlling the border security.

Yisrael Beiteinu, although different than Likud, also supports a two-state solution and suggests the trading of large population blocs (for example, Umm Al-Fahm and the “triangle” would be transferred to the Palestinian Authority in return for Israel officially annexing some Jewish areas in Judea and Samaria.) Finally, there is The Jewish Home, which is basically a reincarnation of the increasingly parve and boring National Religious Party. Some nice people, but not the type of party I would turn to when the future of the country is literally on the line.

It should be obvious then that anyone who truly cares about the future of this country should be voting for The National Union on Election Day, since it is the only party that is 100% dedicated to trying to stop the madness here. For this reason I am alarmed to hear of many good intentioned right-wing voters who are ready to place their vote with either the Likud or Yisrael Beiteinu, either because they are unaware that both these parties support a two-state solution or because they think that strengthening these parties will somehow “provide the answer.” Please don't be fooled. The future of our country is at stake.

Big Surprise

16 Tevet 5769

Actually, there are two, big non-surprises here. Check out the report by Gil Ronen, with graph adapted by Arutz 7 (IsraelNN.com):
"The ruling Kadima party commissioned a poll on Day 2 of Operation Cast Lead to assess how the war affected its chances at the ballot boxes in the upcoming elections, News1 reported Sunday."

Poll Of Polls

Non-Surprise #1:
The war is an election ploy.

Non-Surprise #2:
Labor has been gaining votes. Before the war began, they were projected to receive only eight mandates if the elections had been held at the time of the poll.

However, Foreign Minister Tzippy Livni (Kadima), as well as Defense Minister Ehud Baraq (Labor), may be surprised to learn that Labor has been gaining votes, not at the expense of Netanyahu's Likud Party, but at the expense of Kadima. Kadima also seems to have lost a vote or two to the left-wing Meretz Party. It is hard to tell, with gains by both Meretz and by United Torah Judaism [UTJ] of one mandate.

Livni and Baraq may also be surprised [as, quite frankly, so am I] to learn that Netanyahu's potential right of center/right-wing coalition has risen in the polls from 61 to 63 mandates. Although not significant on the surface, many have been expecting Likud to lose mandates to Labor in the polls, not gain any.

However, it seems that the usually Arab-loving, Israeli news media have finally realized that Hamas is an enemy, one which needs to be dealt with aggressively, and that negotiations as this point would only result in more Qassam rockets and Grad missiles landing on homes in the northern Negev and Shefellah Regions, all the while inching closer to Tel-Aviv,...yet another non-surprise.

Israeli Election Ploy

11 Tevet 5769

By now, most in Israel have caught on to the election ploy that is the current Israeli Defense Forces' [IDF] action in Azza. Necessary and proper as this action is, there is no doubt that it is taking place now, and not three months ago, nor three years ago, due to our proximity to the Israeli national elections to be held on 16 Shevat/February 10.

Fortunately, some Jews in the U. S., like Debbie Schlussel, are also on the ball, and can see through the veil of this war.

I was in Tel Aviv yesterday, and the Kadima and Labor posters were up in force, starting sparsely on the border of the Greater Tel Aviv area (Petah Tiqwah), then all over the place once withing Tel Aviv and suburbs, save for the religious, and mostly Haredi city of B'nei Braq whose votes will undoubtedly go to Shas and United Torah Judaism [UTJ], with some going to the Nationl Union and Likud.

Everywhere there was a Tzippi Livni (Kadima) billboard, an Ehud Baraq (Labor) one was right next to it,...almost as if they were running mates.

In many ways, the Israeli news media has been portraying Foreign Minister Livni as the defacto prime minister,...with very little mention of standing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. And, now all of a sudden it is politically-correct to root for the IDF against the Arabs. That is because it is Kadima and Labor doing the attacking,...and trying to win an election.

Needless to say there are no such posters, let alone billboards in the Shomron (Samaria), almost all of which would be on the chopping blocks if a Kadima/Labor/Mere"tz goverment had anything to say about it. Even Kadima MK Otniel Schneller knows better than to expect any votes to come from his town in the Binyamin Area, Ma'aleh Mikhmas.

There may be some Kadima/Labor efforts in Yehudah (Judea), where two large chunks are said to be included within final status borders in any agreement between Israel and the Arabs. After all, 12% of the City of Efrat voted for Labor, back in 1999.

According to the latest polls, Binyamin Netanyahu (Kadima) could still create a right of center/right wing coalition government of 61, probably too weak for his taste. He may join with Kadima in a unity government. Some time ago, Likud candidate Dan Meridor was talking of trying to convince Netanyahu to make the bold move of giving up the Golan Heights. Many want to know why Meridor is on the Likud list at all. No doubt it is to get his supporters' votes.

It seems that Meridor has been silenced,...at least for the time being. Talk of giving up the Golan will lose votes for the Likud to other farther right-wing parties, threatening the Likud's expected plurality.

Projected seats for Labor have jumped from 8 to 15. Kadima and Likud are still neck and neck. The ploy seems to be working.

I am not optimistic.

Confused?

19 Kilev 5769

The National Union, made up of Tequmah, Moledet, and Ach"i and the National Religious Party [NRP] recently voted to disband their individual parties, and come together to form a brand new one, the Jewish Home Party.

Tequmah is made up of those who used to be the right-wing members of the NRP, until they split off.

This party should not be confused with Meimad, which is made up of those who used to be the left-wing members of the NRP, until they split off, and joined the Labor Party. Meimad has since left Labor, and join the even farther left-wing party, Meretz.

Moledet is a non-religious, nationalist party, now headed by... a rabbi, MK Benny Elon.

Ach"i [Unity, Society, Judaism] used to be known as the Torah Zionism Party, the third break off from the NRP. Co-founder MK Effie Eitam recently left Ach"i, and was headed for a run for the Likud Party list. Even though about six months ago, he had criticized Moshe Feiglin's strategy for doing the same. Yet, when I went to vote in the Likud primaries, I noticed that MK Eitam wasn't on the ballot....

Confused?

Moledet faction member MK Aryeh Eldad has quit his non-religious, nationalist party, and has joined the new, non-religious, nationalist party HaTikvah.

Wait a minute,...now he is proposing that HaTikvah join up with the newly formed Jewish Home Party. Um,...so why did he quit in the first place??

And which "Jewish Home" faction will HaTikvah join anyway?

It looks like the National Union may end up leaving the Jewish Home Party, in other words, leaving the re-invented NRP.

No, I'm not talking about the November threats to split the party; these are the more recent, December threats, or rather the "suggestions," as they seem to be called these days.

Still confused?

Hang on. There's more... Rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpe (Chaba"d) and Baruch Marzel (National Jewish Front) are expected to meet Sunday afternoon to discuss the formation of [yet] a[nother] new, right wing political party (IsraelNN.com).

Will the presence of several small right-wing parties shoot the right-wing in the foot? Will this help the Likud, or just put Kadima back into power?

Will these factions continue to fight, and even demonize, each other, and lose miserably in yet another national election?

Will newly-appointed head of the Jewish Home Party, Rabbi Daniel Hershkowitz ever stop evading the question as to whether he rejects further territorial concessions and evictions of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria?

Will the Israeli public ever snap out of its delusion, and realize that without the National Union, the National Religious Party is neither national, religious, nor even a party? (Discuss amongst yourselves....)

Will the various right-wing factions pull together, and attain a realistic presence in the Knesseth?

Could it be that Tully Fiqrash, writing in the "national religious" newspaper HaTzofeh (Hebrew), is actually correct in stating...
...once again, it has become clear that the struggle is not over ideology, but rather about seats [in Knesseth] and honor, not conceptual but personal....
Will Moshe Feiglin finally realize that no matter how long he plays by the rules, and wins, "they" (eg. Likud, Israeli Supreme Court, Israel's shadow government, etc.) will simply change the rules on him,...again and again?

Will a Sanhedrin be accepted, a king appointed, and work begun on the Mizbe'ah (altar) and Miqdash (Temple), thus canceling the need to participate in this [not even good enough to be called] "Hellenist process?"

Stay tuned...

Tzipi = Golda...Don't Bet On It!

Blogmaster's comment: It is always easy to criticize politicians, particularly if they are vulnerable. Tzipi Livni is a career politician but one who comes from impressive roots. Give her an opportunity to prove to us that her first priority will be the Land and the People of Israel. All of the pundits are saying that she will give away Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and will follow the destructive and divisive policies of Olmert. I believe that this woman has the intestinal fortitude to be a strong leader. I have no doubt that Livni knows what is required. Livini has the abilities necessary to be a hard line negotiator. Livini has what it takes to stand up for Israel. Let us see if she has the political courage to do it!

Golda She is NOT!

by Steven Shamrak, Australia

Some sensation-seeking media outlets called the new leader of the Kadima party, Tzipi Livni, who favours a quick peace deal with the 'Palestinians', the new Golda Meir. Her 'transformations' and 'adaptations' brought her a meteoric rise in Kadima: from her pedigree as the daughter of nationalist militants in the anti-British Irgun underground movement to the hard-right politics of the Likud Party, and now to the point where she eagerly tries to seal a fake peace deal with our enemies. Some would call this career pass a typical example of a "Political prostitute"! (term was invented by V.I. Lenin)

At Livni's request, Kadima's central elections committee extended the polls by 30 minutes, despite Mofaz's protests. Moti Morel, a strategic advisor to Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz, said: "if Livni wins tonight, then Miss Clean will have to live with the eternal stain of having stolen an election with extra time… You can't change the rules of the game in the middle of the game."

A senior Fatah-PA source said that "it is no secret that working with Livni will be much easier". The PA source estimated that if Mofaz were elected he would have tried to create a coalition with Shas and the Zionist parties, whereas "Livni understands that the solution to the situation is a quick diplomatic agreement with us" and she is a willing participant in the 'game'!

MK Shelly Yechimovich (Labor) said that Tzipi Livni should call elections instead of trying to form a coalition in the present Knesset. Speaking at a Rosh HaShanah Likud function, MK Gideon Saar said: "A prime minister must be elected by the entire nation."

Note: The Kadima party was formed in November 2005 to accommodate the political ambitions of 'politically adaptable' and self-serving Israeli politicians from several parties.

Dear Friend, please, visit and read http://www.shamrak.com/hauma.php and become active. Because the enemies of Israel and Democracy are!

Food for Thought. by Steven Shamrak

We live in a strange times: when rabbis failed to provide spiritual and moral guidance for fear of offending members of synagogue committees and congregants; when communities are stagnating and disappearing under the weight of political correctness and the fake notion of plurality; when assimilation dominates and destroys our uniqueness; when political leadership does not lead, but betrays Jewish inspirations of Jewish people and cares more about photo opportunities, acceptance by others and their pockets. But, we are still alive and fighting back!

Kadima's Plan to Destroy Israel. Referring to his draft law on compensation for settlers who volunteer to evacuate the West Bank, Vice PM Haim Ramon said that everything located to the east of the security barrier will no longer be under Israeli sovereignty. Ramon said that the draft law will be submitted to the government for approval in several weeks. The law proposes giving 1.1 million shekels (or about $300,000) to families opting to leave the West Bank voluntarily. They will get a bonus of 25% if they settle in the Negev Desert region, and 15% if they go to the Galilee region in the north. (It would be cheaper and more effective in the fight against terror to facilitate the move of the enemy population to Sinai!)

Stupidity of Democratic Pluralism. The Vice Presidential candidate on Republican ticket has been dropped from the list of dignitaries that are to speak at a key rally in New York on Monday. Bowing to threats from Jewish Democratic groups, the organizers decided to withdraw her invitation days after Senator Hillary Clinton cancelled her own participation in the rally.
Organizers are calling for the U.N. to hold Iran's president accountable for his calls to "wipe Israel off the map," which they say is an incitement to genocide and thus a clear violation of the U.N.'s Charter. The organizers also invited Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Biden, who has reportedly told Israeli officials that they "will just have to accept a nuclear armed Iran." Biden will not be attending the event. (Mr Biden, why USA unable to accept al-Qaida?)

Jewish Political Prisoners in Israel. Ofer Gamliel, who was convicted of membership in a Jewish underground group that planned attacks on Arabs, began a hunger strike last Tuesday. Gamliel has been in prison for over six years. He and other Jewish security prisoners have not been granted the privileges given other prisoners.

Emotional Blackmail. According to Salah al-Bardawil, a Hamas deputy, the Hamas will not discuss the release of soldier Gilad Shalit before the re-opening of the crossing terminal at Rafah with Egypt. (Hamas is using Shalit for emotional blackmail, in order to hold Israel's military actions in Gaza and assure continuation of arms smuggling. There is no honesty in the negotiations for Shalit's freedom on Hamas part! The Kadima party allows this travesty and negotiates with Hamas without receiving any "proof of life"!)

Quote of the Week:

''Our goal is not democracy. 'Our goal is stability.'' - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad – The Arab/Muslim leadership is able to produce dictatorship only. They achieve "Stability" by diverting people's anger from internal issues against Israel and "Infidels"!

Walking Path of Self-Destruction. Israel has agreed to accept 20,000 Arab 'refugees' who abandoned their homes and fled Israel during the 1948 war, according to a report published Saturday in a Qatari newspaper. (The 'refugees' left in order to facilitate the slaughter of Jews by advancing Arab armies. Now they want to come to Israel to facilitate the demographic destruction of Israel!)

Fraudulent anti-Israel Campaigners. Lauren Booth, sister-in-law of Quartet Middle East envoy Tony Blair, has been photographed buying Snickers candy bars and soft drinks in a well-stocked food store in Gaza. She has called the region a "concentration camp" that is "under siege" by Israel's having restricted crossings due to continuing terrorist attacks against Israel.

What is this Withdrawal for?
by Steven Shamrak.

(This article I wrote a few months before 8,500 Jews were forcefully deported from Gaza by their own government, lead by Kadima party!)

In order to achieve any goal it is necessary to have one in the first place! Any minute act in our life is preceded by intention in order to realize a goal. What is the goal of the withdrawal from Gaza? It would be reasonable to assume that the objective is Peace! But we have not heard of any negotiations with Palestinian Authorities. There is not even a pledge of a Hudna, the Arab's promise of tactical ceasefire.

Since the withdrawal plan was announced we have witnessed the escalation of demands made by the PA and an increase of terror acts. We are led to believe that the evacuation of 8,500 Jews from Gaza will 'reduce' Arab terrorism, will save money and Jewish lives. Let's examine these justifications closely:

1. Withdrawal will reduce terror acts committed by Arab Palestinians. – Unfortunately, most reputable political, intelligence and military experts and analysts, including the Israeli government ones from Shin Beth and IDF, predict the increase of terrorism and anarchy in Gaza after withdrawal.

2. It will save Jewish lives. – The uncontrollable supply of weapons through the border with Egypt and flow of deadly cargo through the proposed Gaza port will bring a more deadly and sophisticated arsenal into the hands of Arab terrorists. There will be rocket-propelled grenades, artillery, Katushas and high-grade explosives for suicide belts.

3. It will save money. – Israel is already wasting millions on additional security and construction of new security roads. Just new fence upgrades will cost up to $220 million dollars. Plus: compensation to those who have been stripped of their property and businesses; the loss of revenue from border taxes; the loss of $100 million dollars generated by economy of 21 Jewish communities.

What are the negative issues that the withdrawal brings?

1. The withdrawal will create the precedent of an ethnic cleansing of Jews by Jews and abandonment of Jewish ancestral land.

2. It is the public relations disaster, which creates the shocking image of Israel.
3. It has already been undermining Jewish national unity.

4. It is encouraging the enemies of the Jewish people, not only Arabs, to persist with their anti-Israel campaign, aiming for the destruction or weakening of the Jewish state.

5. It is possible that the deportation of Jews from Gaza contradicts the Fourth Geneva convention and can be qualified as a crime against humanity.

6. Deployment of the Egyptian army at the border with Gaza puts in danger the demilitarization of Sinai agreed in Camp David.

History teaches us that when Jews give something up it is almost impossible to get it back! It took us 2,000 years to come back to Palestine. But still we are not allowed to be in charge of our land!

Some are trying to justify withdrawal by saying that it is the first step toward the two states on one land solution. But even they realize the impossibility of the idea of life next to Arabs without checkpoints.

Let us be generous and assume that it will work. It does not explain the questions: Why is it necessary to transfer Jews from "Arab controlled" land? At the same time, why should Arabs remain on "Jewish controlled land"? The withdrawal contradicts and undermines the idyllic picture of happy co-existence of two nations - Arabs and Jews – who are living in harmony and love, next to each other!

I do want peace in Israel, but with all my vivid imagination I am not able to visualize it while Arab hate dwells inside the Jewish state. By repeating the same acts one will get the same results. Why would the same misguided and impotent plans bring peace to Israel? The question still remains: What are we sacrificing the Jewish national dream, Jewish unity and Jewish lives for?
