... "Oom shmoom"... Ben Gurion used this derisive expression -- "oom" is shorthand in Hebrew for United Nations -- to express his contempt for it. It stands today, although we must pay attention at some level to what goes on in this morally corrupt institution.

Yesterday Ahmadinejad spoke again to the General Assembly. Morally corrupt barely describes an institution that would grant him this courtesy.

I will not in any way focus on what Ahmadinejad said. Of interest to me, first, are the countries that walked out on him:

France took the lead when Ahmadinejad began castigating Israel, and then Argentina, Australia, Britain, Costa Rica, Denmark, France Germany, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand and the United States followed.

Israel was not in the hall, having called for a boycott of the talk. Canada -- which deserves kudos for its support -- had joined that boycott.

And then, most importantly of all, there is this:

Tonight Israel time, afternoon US time, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke to the General Assembly, and oh he did us proud. Israel, first, but then Jews everywhere. A moral challenge to Oom Shmoom.

Excerpts from his talk (emphasis is mine):

"The UN was founded after the carnage of World War II, [and was] charged with preventing the reoccurrence of such horrendous events.

"Nothing has impeded [this work] more than the systematic assault on the truth.
"Yesterday the president of Iran stood at this podium spewing anti-Semitic rants… Just a few days earlier he claimed the Holocaust is a lie.

"Last month I went to a villa in a suburb of Berlin called Wannsee [where the Nazis planned the Final Solution for the Jews in January 1942].

"Is this protocol a lie? [Holding out a facsimile of the Final Solution plans.] Is the German government lying?

"The day before I was in Wannsee, I was given in Berlin the original construction plans for the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. These plans I now hold in my hand [showing the worn-out blueprints to the assembly]. They contain a signature by Heinrich Himmler, Hitler's deputy.

"Are these plans of the camp where one million Jews were murdered a lie too?
"Yesterday, the man who called the Holocaust a lie spoke from this podium. For those who refused to come, and those who left in protest - I commend you, you stood up for moral clarity.

"But for those who stayed - I say on behalf of the Jewish people, my people and decent people everywhere - have you no shame? No decency? What a disgrace, what a mockery of the charter of the UN.

"...perhaps some of you think that this man and his regime threaten only the Jews - well, if you think that - you're wrong, dead wrong.

"In the past 30 years, this fanaticism spread across the globe with a murderous violence that knows no bounds, [so that Islamic terrorism has hurt Muslims, Christian and Hindus as well as Jews].

"Wherever [Islamic fanatics] can, they enforce a backward system of government. [This is a struggle between] the 21st Century and the 9th Century.

"Ultimately, the past cannot triumph over the future. And our future promises magnificent bounties of hope.

"...We will find an alternative to fossil fuel, and yes, we will clean up the planet. But if the most primitive fanaticism can acquire the most deadly weapons, the march of history can be reversed [for a lengthy period of time].

"This is why the greatest threat facing the world today is the marriage between religious fanaticism and weapons of mass destruction.

"Is the UN up to that? Will the international community stand up to the despotism of a government against its own people? The jury is still out on the UN. Recent signs are not encouraging."

The prime minister then addressed the Goldstone Commission report about our alleged war crimes in Gaza.

"Not one UN resolution was passed condemning Hamas rocket attacks on Israel. We heard nothing, absolutely nothing from the UN Human Rights Council.

"Israel unilaterally withdrew from every inch of Gaza, uprooting over 8,000 Israelis from their homes… because many in Israel believed that this would get peace.

"[But] instead we got an Iranian-backed terror base 50 miles from Tel Aviv, and life in the Israeli towns and cities near Gaza became nothing less than a nightmare. Hamas attacks increased ten-fold after we withdrew, and again, the UN was silent, absolutely silent.
"...after 8 years of unremitting assault Israel was forced to respond...

"Faced with an enemy committing double war crimes - firing at civilians while hiding behind civilians - Israel sought to carry out surgical attacks on terrorists, not an easy task when fighting squads in a densely populated area.

"Israel tried to minimize civilian casualties…We dropped countless flyers over Gazans' homes, sent text messages to Palestinian residents, made cellular phone calls urging them to vacate, to leave...never has a country gone to such length to remove the enemy's civilian population away from harm's way.

"[But] the UN Human Rights Council decided to condemn Israel, we were morally hanged, given an unfair trial to boot… What a perversion of truth and justice.

"...[if the claims of Israeli war crimes are accepted] the UN would revert to its darkest age - when Zionism was equated with racism.

"If the report is not rejected, the UN will go into a process of vitiating itself from relevance. The world will be sending a message to terrorists that terrorism pays - you will win immunity if you launch your attacks from densely populated areas."
(At about this point, the Palestinians left the hall.)

"What a travesty! The biased and unjust report provided a clear-cut test to all governments - will you stand with Israel or with the terrorists? We must know the answer to that question now - not later. If Israel is asked to take more risks for peace we must know today that you will stand with us tomorrow. We can take further risks for peace only if we have confidence that we can defend ourselves.

"All of Israel wants peace...If the Palestinians truly want peace, we will make peace. But we want a defensible peace, permanent peace.

"We ask the Palestinians to say yes to a Jewish state, as simple, as clear, as elementary as that. We are not foreign conquerors in the land of Israel. We are not strangers to this land - this is our homeland...

"...we don't want another Gaza, or south Lebanon, another Iranian-backed terror base near Jerusalem. We want peace and I believe that with goodwill and hard work such a peace can be achieved, but it requires from all of us to roll back the forces of terror backed by Iran that seek to eliminate Israel and overthrow world order."
And then the ending, from Joshua:

"Let us be strong and of good courage... let us confront the peril… let us forge an enduring peace for generations to come."

Peace Process or War Process?

When Barack Obama announced in June 2009 about Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy, "I'm confident that if we stick with it, having started early, that we can make some serious progress this year," he displayed a touching, if naïve optimism.

Indeed, his determination fits a well-established pattern of determination by politicians to "solve" the Arab-Israeli conflict; there were fourteen U.S. government initiatives just during the two George W. Bush administrations. Might this time be different? Will trying harder or being more clever end the conflict?

No, there is no chance whatever of this effort working.

Without looking at the specifics of the Obama approach — which are in themselves problematic — I shall argue three points: that past Israeli-Palestinian negotiations have failed; that their failure resulted from an Israeli illusion about avoiding war; and that Washington should urge Jerusalem to forego negotiations and return instead to its earlier and more successful policy of fighting for victory.

I. Reviewing the "Peace Process"

The two hands of September 1993, when Yitzhak Rabin and Yasir Arafat shook hands with President Clinton watching.It is embarrassing to recall the elation and expectations that accompanied the signing of the Oslo accords in September 1993 when Israel's prime minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands on the White House lawn with Yasir Arafat, the Palestinian leader. For some years afterward, "The Handshake" (as it was then capitalized) served as the symbol of brilliant diplomacy, whereby each side achieved what it most wanted: dignity and autonomy for the Palestinians, recognition and security for the Israelis.
President Bill Clinton hosted the ceremony and lauded the deal as a "great occasion of history." Secretary of State Warren Christopher concluded that "the impossible is within our reach." Yasir Arafat called the signing an "historic event, inaugurating a new epoch." Israel's foreign minister Shimon Peres said one could see in it "the outline of peace in the Middle East."

The press displayed similar expectations. Anthony Lewis, a New York Times columnist, deemed the agreement "stunning" and "ingeniously built." Time magazine made Arafat and Rabin two of its "men of the year" for 1993. To cap it off, Arafat, Rabin, and Peres jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize for 1994.

As the accords led to a deterioration of conditions for Palestinians and Israelis, rather than the expected improvement, these heady anticipations quickly dissipated.

When Palestinians still lived under Israeli control, pre-Oslo accords, they had benefited from the rule of law and a growing economy, independent of international welfare. They enjoyed functioning schools and hospitals; they traveled without checkpoints and had free access to Israeli territory. They even founded several universities. Terrorism declined as acceptance of Israel increased. Oslo then brought Palestinians not peace and prosperity, but tyranny, failed institutions, poverty, corruption, a death cult, suicide factories, and Islamist radicalization. Yasir Arafat had promised to build his new dominion into a Middle Eastern Singapore, but the reality he ruled became a nightmare of dependence, inhumanity, and loathing, more akin to Liberia or the Congo.

The two hands of October 2000, when a young Palestinian showed off his bloody hands after lynching two Israeli reservists.

As for Israelis, they watched as Palestinian rage spiraled upward, inflicting unprecedented violence on them; the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that more Israelis were killed by Palestinian terrorists in the five years after the Oslo accords than in the fifteen years preceding it. If the two hands in the Rabin-Arafat handshake symbolized Oslo's early hopes, the two bloody hands of a young Palestinian male who had just lynched Israeli reservists in Ramallah in October 2000 represented its dismal end. In addition, Oslo did great damage to Israel's standing internationally, resurrecting questions about the very existence of a sovereign Jewish state, especially on the Left, and spawning moral perversions such as the U.N. World Conference against Racism in Durban. From Israel's perspective, the seven years of Oslo diplomacy, 1993-2000, largely undid forty-five years of success in warfare.

Palestinians and Israelis agree on little, but with a near universality they concur that the Oslo accords failed. What is called the "peace process" should rather be called the "war process."

II. The False Hope of Finessing War

Why did things go so badly wrong? Where lay the flaws in so promising an agreement?

Yitzhak Rabin's understanding that "One does not make peace with one's friends. One makes peace with one's enemy" led Arab-Israeli diplomacy fundamentally astray.Of a multiplicity of errors, the ultimate mistake lay in Yitzhak Rabin's misunderstanding of how war ends, as revealed by his catch-phrase, "One does not make peace with one's friends. One makes peace with one's enemy." The Israeli prime minister expected war to be concluded through goodwill, conciliation, mediation, flexibility, restraint, generosity, and compromise, topped off with signatures on official documents. In this spirit, his government and those of his three successors — Shimon Peres, Binyamin Netanyahu, Ehud Barak — initiated an array of concessions, hoping and expecting the Palestinians to reciprocate.

They did not. In fact, Israeli concessions inflamed Palestinian hostility. Palestinians interpreted Israeli efforts to "make peace" as signals of demoralization and weakness. "Painful concessions" reduced the Palestinian awe of Israel, made the Jewish state appear vulnerable, and incited irredentist dreams of annihilation. Each Oslo-negotiated gesture by Israel further exhilarated, radicalized, and mobilized the Palestinian body politic to war. The quiet hope of 1993 to eliminate Israel gained traction, becoming a deafening demand by 2000. Venomous speech and violent actions soared. Polls and votes in recent years suggest that a mere 20 percent of Palestinians accept the existence of a Jewish state.

Rabin's mistake was simple and profound: One cannot "make peace with one's enemy," as he imagined. Rather, one makes peace with one's former enemy. Peace nearly always requires one side in a conflict to be defeated and thus give up its goals.

Wars end not through goodwill but through victory. "Let your great object [in war] be victory" observed Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese strategist. "War is an act of violence to compel the enemy to fulfill our will," wrote his nineteenth-century Prussian successor, Karl von Clausewitz in 1832. Douglas MacArthur observed in 1951 that in "war, there is no substitute for victory."

Technological advancement has not altered this insight. Fighting either continues or potentially can resume so long as both sides hope to achieve their war goals. Victory consists of imposing one's will on the enemy, compelling him to give up his war ambitions. Wars typically end when one side gives up hope, when its will to fight has been crushed.

Defeat, one might think, usually follows on devastating battlefield losses, as was the case of the Axis in 1945. But that has rarely occurred during the past sixty years. Battlefield losses by the Arab states to Israel in 1948-82, by North Korea in 1953, by Saddam Hussein in 1991, and by Iraqi Sunnis in 2003 did not translate into despair and surrender. Morale and will matter more these days. Although they out-manned and out-gunned their foes, the French gave up in Algeria, the Americans in Vietnam, and the Soviets in Afghanistan. The Cold War ended, notably, with barely a fatality. Crushing the enemy's will to fight, then, does not necessarily mean crushing the enemy.

Arabs and Israelis since 1948 have pursued static and opposite goals: Arabs fought to eliminate Israel; Israelis fought to win their neighbors' acceptance. Details have varied over the decades with multiple ideologies, strategies, and leading actors, but the twin goals have remained in place and unbridgeable. If the conflict is to end, one side must lose and one side win. Either there will be no more Zionist state or it will be accepted by its neighbors. Those are the only two scenarios for ending the conflict. Anything else is unstable and a premise for further warfare.

The Arabs have pursued their war aims with patience, determination, and purpose; the exceptions to this pattern (e.g., the Egyptian and Jordanian peace treaties) have been operationally insignificant because they have not tamped hostility to Israel's existence. In response, Israelis sustained a formidable record of strategic vision and tactical brilliance in the period 1948-93. Over time, however, as Israel developed into a wealthy country, its populace grew impatient with the humiliating, slow, boring, bitter, and expensive task of convincing Arabs to accept their political existence. By now, few in Israel still see victory as the goal; almost no major political figure on the scene today calls for victory in war. Uzi Landau, currently minister of national infrastructure, who argues that "when you're in a war you want to win the war," is the rare exception.

The Hard Work of Winning

*In place of victory, Israelis developed an imaginative array of approaches to manage the conflict:
*Territorial compromise: Yitzhak Rabin (and the Oslo process).
*Develop the Palestinian economy: Shimon Peres (and the Oslo process).
*Unilateralism (build a wall, withdraw from Gaza): Ariel Sharon, Ehud Olmert, and the Kadima party.
*Lease the land under Israeli towns on the West Bank for 99 years: Amir Peretz and the Labor Party.
*Encourage the Palestinians to develop good government: Natan Sharansky (and George W. Bush).
*Territorial retreat: Israel's Left.
*Exclude disloyal Palestinians from Israeli citizenship: Avigdor Lieberman.
*Offer Jordan as Palestine: elements of Israel's Right.
*Expel Palestinians from lands controlled by Israel: Meir Kahane.

Contradictory in spirit and mutually exclusive as they are, these approaches all aim to finesse war rather than win it. Not one of them addresses the need to break the Palestinian will to fight. Just as the Oslo negotiations failed, I predict that so too will every Israeli scheme that avoids the hard work of winning.

Ehud Olmert speaking for the Israel Policy Forum in June 2005, where he announced that Israelis "are tired of fighting, we are tired of being courageous, we are tired of winning, we are tired of defeating our enemies."Since 1993, in brief, the Arabs have sought victory while Israelis sought compromise. In this spirit, Israelis openly announced their fatigue with warfare. Shortly before becoming prime minister, Ehud Olmert said on behalf of his countrymen: "We are tired of fighting; we are tired of being courageous; we are tired of winning; we are tired of defeating our enemies." After becoming prime minister, Olmert proclaimed: "Peace is achieved through concessions. We all know that." Such defeatist statements prompted Yoram Hazony of the Shalem Center to characterize Israelis as "an exhausted people, confused and without direction."

But who does not win, loses. To survive, Israelis eventually must return to their pre-1993 policy of establishing that Israel is strong, tough, and permanent. That is achieved through deterrence — the tedious task of convincing Palestinians and others that the Jewish state will endure and that dreams of elimination must fail.

This will not be easy or quick. Due to missteps during the Oslo years and after (especially the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza of 2005 and the Lebanon war of 2006), Palestinians perceive Israel as economically and militarily strong but morally and politically weak. In the pungent words of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Israel is "weaker than a spider's web." Such scorn will likely require decades of hard work to reverse. Nor will it be pretty: Defeat in war typically entails that the loser experience deprivation, failure, and despair.

Israel does enjoy one piece of good fortune: It need only deter the Palestinians, not the whole Arab and Muslim populations. Moroccans, Iranians, Malaysians, and others take their cues from the Palestinians and with time will follow their lead. Israel's ultimate enemy, the one whose will it needs to crush, is roughly the same demographic size as itself.

This process may be seen through a simple prism. Any development that encourages Palestinians to think they can eliminate Israel is negative, any that encourages them to give up that goal is positive.

The Palestinians' defeat will be recognizable when, over a protracted period and with complete consistency, they prove that they have accepted Israel. This does not mean loving Zion, but it does mean permanently accepting it — overhauling the educational system to take out the demonization of Jews and Israel, telling the truth about Jewish ties to Jerusalem, and accepting normal commercial, cultural, and human relations with Israelis.

Palestinian démarches and letters to the editor are acceptable but violence is not. The quiet that follows must be consistent and enduring. Symbolically, one can conclude that Palestinians have accepted Israel and the war is over when Jews living in Hebron (on the West Bank) have no more need for security than Arabs living in Nazareth (in Israel).

III. U.S. Policy

Like all outsiders to the conflict, Americans face a stark choice: Endorse the Palestinian goal of eliminating Israel or endorse Israel's goal of winning its neighbors' acceptance.

To state the choice makes clear that there is no choice — the first is barbaric, the second civilized. No decent person can endorse the Palestinians' genocidal goal of eliminating their neighbor. Following every president since Harry S Truman, and every congressional resolution and vote since then, the U.S. government must stand with Israel in its drive to win acceptance.

Not only is this an obvious moral choice, but Israel's win, ironically, would be the best thing that ever happened to the Palestinians. Compelling them finally to give up on their irredentist dream would liberate them to focus on their own polity, economy, society, and culture. Palestinians need to experience the crucible of defeat to become a normal people — one whose parents stop celebrating their children becoming suicide terrorists, whose obsession with Zionist rejectionism collapses. There is no shortcut.

This analysis implies a radically different approach for the U.S. government from the current one. On the negative side, it puts Palestinians on notice that benefits will flow to them only after they prove their acceptance of Israel. Until then — no diplomacy, no discussion of final status, no recognition as a state, and certainly no financial aid or weapons.

On the positive side, the U. S. administration should work with Israel, the Arab states, and others to induce the Palestinians to accept Israel's existence by convincing them that they have lost. This means impressing on the Israeli government the need not just to defend itself but to take steps to demonstrate to Palestinians the hopelessness of their cause. That requires not episodic shows of force (such as the 2008-09 war against Hamas in Gaza) but a sustained and systematic effort to deflate a bellicose mentality.

Israel's victory also directly helps its U.S. ally, for some of its enemies — Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran — are also America's. Tougher Israeli tactics would help Washington in smaller ways, too. Washington should encourage Jerusalem not to engage in prisoner exchanges with terrorist groups, not to allow Hezbollah to re-arm in southern Lebanon or Fatah or Hamas in Gaza, and not to withdraw unilaterally from the West Bank (which would effectively turn over the region to Hamas terrorists and threaten Hashemite rule in Jordan).

Diplomacy aiming to shut down the Arab-Israeli conflict is premature until Palestinians give up their anti-Zionism. When that happy moment arrives, negotiations can re-open and take up anew the Oslo issues — borders, resources, armaments, sanctities, residential rights. But that is years or decades away. In the meantime, an ally needs to win.

The Defense Minister takes pride in threatening the continued existence of many small Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. At least now we know how much “spine” was shown in Washington. The bitter truth of the current Israeli government surfaces, like scum on a pond. It is sadly funny how one by one, each party head proves to be a true politician, all except the defense minister, who remains true to his words.

We are taught, everything is for the good, and so it is with at this stage also. For anyone who was unsure as to the stand of the Likud leadership, now knows. Whoever thought the Ministry of Defense is about protecting the Jewish State now knows better, whoever thought that the left cares about a Jewish State now should know better. They have buried themselves politically for the future, as they have proven, their loyalty lies only within themselves. The numbers of those that believe in a safe and strong Jewish state continue to grow higher, the opponent’s days are numbered. Honestly, how long can this weak union last. I had hoped for at least a little political savvy from our Prime Minister, I had hoped that he would respect the democratic process and the will of a people, but, c'est la vie, he had his chance to be a real leader, a world leader.

As we get ready for Chapter 2 in “Bibi’s Believe It or Not” we must rejoice that the true face of these actors have surfaced. At least now we know whom else we can’t trust, again. Now I know that what the Prime Minister sees, we don’t. Who are we but the small citizen? But what do we see? We see that Jews may be evicted again from their homes, we see that the those that asked us to vote for Likud were wrong, again, and we see that the lack of unity among the right wing parties once again shoots us in the foot. We see weakness in our leaders, again, and treachery in their midst.

When will we learn? Each party and their rhetoric about who is more true to the “cause”, who loves Israel more, who will put up a fight. In the end, because they can’t even get along, we of Yehuda and Shomron and all of the Jewish people in the world will suffer. They love to yell more than they love to do, and in the end they lost out. Now all they have left is to demonstrate and make noise, shout and wave their fists…. big deal.
As they are busy fighting amongst themselves, the left rejoices and plots against the continued existence of the Jewish State. Wake up boys, the game started years ago. Time is not on our side.

Still, one cannot understand the hatred of the left, how they despise our heritage and identity. A law is about to be passed claiming that the celebration of “Nakba” or the Catastrophe of Israel, will be forbidden, makes sense to most normal people. But those on the left say it is a limitation on the democratic right of free speech. Of course they play by a double standard, if it is against anything Jewish in character it is all right, if it causes displeasure and harm to the religious part of Israeli society, it is good, and if it helps the sworn enemies of Israel, then it is democratic. Of course, the opposite is considered fascist and racist.

The rumor mill has it that Obama’s upcoming speech in Egypt will have some of the most damaging elements towards Israel that our people have yet to hear from any US Administration, and we in Israel will once again be asked (or told) to agree to an imaginary peace process, that will almost definitely take its toll in bloodshed.

The Obama Government is proving to be the most arrogant, ignorant and threatening administration Israel has known for quite some time. How they can ignore the reality of Abbas and his ilk is truly an insult to the American people. The “chutzpah” the US shows towards Israel, who are they to dictate how many children we may bear, how many children may live alongside their parents. In the end, we have our own to thank for that, for they too believe the lies and are responsible for this travesty. I doubt they will wake up soon, isn’t “change” wonderful?

How fitting for this speech to be made in Pharaoh’s neighborhood, hopefully we will see the same end result and miracles that we experienced in our past, where the Jewish people emerge a strong and unified people in their land.

The Osama-Obama Administration Shows It's True Colors: "F$@# Israel"

Blogmaster's Comment: I am an American Jew and I am ashamed of my countries betrayal of one of our closest friends and the deliberate sacrifice of brave individuals who were fighting Hizbullah and Islamic Terrorism. The actions of our intelligence community are in this instance, egregious and reprehensible. The assistance given that resulted in the arrest of these men will without doubt, cause their torture and execution at the hands of our enemies. All I can say is “Never Trust the United States”! We screwed the Chinese after WWII, we screwed the Cuban Liberators at the Bay of Pigs, and we betrayed the Vietnamese – handing their country to the Communists and causing the death and torture of thousands. It is no wonder that we are hated around the world. And now what do we do? We push our best friend under the bus. Go figure! .

This is not a Which-Side-Is-Obama-On-Alert -- like so many short-sighted programs that ultimately aid the global jihad, it began before he was President. It was begun, no doubt, by learned analysts trained in realpolitik and blissfully ignorant of the jihad doctrine and Islamic supremacism. They no doubt believed, and believe, that this would be a good way to win hearts and minds in Lebanon. They probably won't realize how deeply they've aided in the betrayal of a U.S. ally that is on the front line of the jihad until it is too late.

Lebanon arrested five people over the weekend suspected of belonging to an intelligence cell transmitting information about Hezbollah to Israel, the most recent arrests in a two-month crackdown apparently aided by American training and equipment.
Al Jazeera TV broadcast images yesterday of a small table containing hidden communication devices, a modem concealing transmission equipment and forged passports - all allegedly used by the suspects.

Hezbollah-controlled Al-Manar television reported that the suspects' job was to collect information on potential targets such as the group's installations and the homes of its leaders.

The suspects are among 17 people allegedly belonging to six espionage cells who have been arrested in Lebanon in the past two months on suspicion of transmitting intelligence information to Israel....

The Internal Security Forces have long been accused of representing the interests of Lebanese parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri, son of slain prime minister Rafik Hariri, and his supporters.

"This organization is seen as a more reliable one than the army, which still appears to be close to Syria and Hezbollah," one of the sources said.

The United States has provided $1 billion in aid since 2006, including $410 million in security assistance to the Lebanese military and police. But U.S. officials have said they would review aid to Lebanon depending on the results of the June 7 election, which could oust the U.S.-backed government.

Israel has expressed reservations about American aid to the Lebanese army and security services, saying those organizations will ultimately be unable to contend with Hezbollah and that any aid is liable to serve Hezbollah's interests.

A STUNNING U.S. REFUSAL TO AID ISRAEL

Blogmaster's remarks: We have long realized that Washington treats Israel as it's unruly child, prone to misbehavior which can place the U.S. in precarious international political positions. However, we also realize that abandonment of Israel by America is impossible considering the considerable support we enjoy in Congress today (which could easily change within a relatively short period). The State Department's influence on the sale of military hardware to Israel is overpowering. In no uncertain terms, State used its influence to hold the "status quo" and prevented the transfer of any military hardware to Israel that would have upset the "balance of power" in the Middle East. It is essential that Israel crank up our defense industry, and as rapidly as possible, produce and stockpile what we need for any military eventuality. It is not at all certain that the umbrella of protection from the United States over Israel will be maintained. We must wean ourselves from dependence upon anyone but ourselves.

U.S. rebuffs Israeli request for arms geared toward Iran strike

The American administration has rejected an Israeli request for military equipment and support that would improve Israel's ability to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.

The Americans viewed the request, which was transmitted (and rejected) at the highest level, as a sign that Israel is in the advanced stages of preparations to attack Iran. They therefore warned Israel against attacking, saying such a strike would undermine American interests. They also demanded that Israel give them prior notice if it nevertheless decided to strike Iran.

As compensation for the requests it rejected, Washington offered to improve Israel's defenses against surface-to-surface missiles.

Israel responded by saying it reserves the right to take whatever action it deems necessary if diplomatic efforts to halt Iran's nuclearization fail.

Senior Israeli officials had originally hoped that U.S. President George Bush would order an American strike on Iran's nuclear facilities before leaving office, as America's military is far better equipped to conduct such a strike successfully than is Israel's.

Jerusalem also fears that an Israeli strike, even if it succeeded well enough to delay Iran's nuclear development for a few years, would give Iran international legitimacy for its program, which it currently lacks. Israel, in contrast, would be portrayed as an aggressor, and would be forced to contend alone with Iran's retaliation, which would probably include thousands of missile strikes by Iranian allies Hezbollah, Hamas and perhaps even Syria.

Recently, however, Israel has concluded that Bush is unlikely to attack, and will focus instead on ratcheting up diplomatic pressure on Tehran. It prefers to wait until this process has been exhausted, though without conceding the military option. Israel's assumption is that Iran will continue to use delaying tactics, and may even agree to briefly suspend its uranium enrichment program in an effort to see out the rest of Bush's term in peace.

The American-Israeli dispute over a military strike against Iran erupted during Bush's visit to Jerusalem in May. At the time, Bush held a private meeting on the Iranian threat with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and the Israelis presented their request for certain specific items of military equipment, along with diplomatic and security backing.

Following Bush's return to Washington, the administration studied Israel's request, and this led it to suspect that Israel was planning to attack Iran within the next few months. The Americans therefore decided to send a strong message warning it not to do so.
U.S. National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen both visited here in June and, according to the Washington Post, told senior Israeli defense officials that Iran is still far from obtaining nuclear weapons, and that an attack on Iran would undermine American interests. Therefore, they said, the U.S. would not allow Israeli planes to overfly Iraq en route to Iran.

The Americans sent a similar message to Iraq, which had objected vociferously to the idea of its air space being used for an Israeli attack on Iran.

These private messages were accompanied by a series of leaks from the Pentagon that Israel interpreted as attempts to thwart any possibility of an attack on Iran. For instance, the Americans revealed details of a major Israel Air Force exercise in the Mediterranean; they also said they doubted Israel had adequate intelligence about Iran's nuclear facilities. In addition, Mullen spoke out publicly against an attack on Iran.

Two weeks ago, Barak visited Washington for talks with his American counterpart, Robert Gates, and Vice President Richard Cheney. Both conversations focused on Iran, but the two Americans presented conflicting views: Gates vehemently opposes an attack on Iran, while Cheney is the administration's leading hawk.

Barak presented Israel's assessments of the Iranian situation and warned that Iran was liable to advance its nuclear program under cover of the endless deliberations about sanctions - which have thus far produced little in the way of action. He also acknowledged that effective sanctions would require cooperation from Russia, China and India, all of which currently oppose sanctions with real teeth.

Russia, however, is considered key to efforts to isolate Iran, and Israeli officials have therefore urged their American counterparts in recent months to tone down Washington's other disputes with Moscow to focus all its efforts on obtaining Russia's backing against Iran. For instance, they suggested that Washington offer to drop its plan to station a missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic - a proposal Russia views as a threat, though Washington insists the system is aimed solely at Iran - in exchange for Russia agreeing to stiffer sanctions against Iran. However, the administration rejected this idea.

In an attempt to compensate Israel for having rejected all its proposals, Washington then offered to bolster Israel's defenses against ballistic missiles. For instance, Gates proposed stationing an advanced radar system in Israel and linking Israel directly into America's early warning satellite network; he also offered increased American funding for the development of two Israeli missile defense systems - the Arrow-3, an upgrade of Israel's existing Arrow system for intercepting ballistic missiles, and Iron Dome, a system designed to intercept short-range rockets. In addition, Washington agreed to sell Israel nine Super Hercules long-range transport aircraft for $2 billion. However, it would not agree to supply Israel with any offensive systems.

Now, Israel is awaiting the outcome of the latest talks between the West and Iran, as well as a formal announcement of the opening of an American interests section in Tehran. Israel views the latter as sure proof that Washington is not planning a military strike.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned Israel on Friday that its plan to build 300 house units on land captured in the 1967 Six Day War threatened U.S.-backed efforts to reach peace with the Palestinians. "We are in a time when the goal is to build maximum confidence with the parties and this doesn't help to build confidence," she said in rare U.S. criticism of Israel.

"There should not be anything which might prejudge final-status negotations," Rice said after talks with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on the sidelines of a NATO meeting of foreign ministers. "It's even more important now that we are on the eve of the beginning of the negotiations. I made that position clear," she told a news conference.

Israel has issued a tender for the construction of some 300 units in Har Homa, one of several residential districts that have been built on land captured by Israel in the 1967 war. The United States fears the move could scupper peace talks launched last week at a U.S.-hosted conference in Annapolis, Maryland. Peace negotiations are due to begin on December 12.

Haaretz reported on Friday that the U.S. has requested that Israel provide clarifications on the building plan.

Palestinian leaders have said the plan undermines the peace process, aimed at reviving talks that had been dormant for seven years.

Under obligations contained in the 2003 U.S.-backed roadmap framework for Middle East peace, Israel must cease settlement activity. STATE DEPARTMENT ATTACKS ISRAEL THROUGH CHICAGO TRIBUNE

When the Arabist U.S. State Department goes into full attack mode against Israel and thus American Jews, one must look a little deeper for motive. Generally, when Israel is being set up to be manipulated within the next month or two, the propaganda machine in the bowels of the State Department starts calling in its IOUs from certain flagship journals to do a black bag job on Israel. Newspapers are the main venue and such papers as the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, LA Times, among others are the selected leakers.

Tuesday, October 2nd, the Chicago Tribune went way out of the way to bash Israel on an event that occurred 40 years ago on June 8, 1967 when Israel was fighting for her life against Egypt, Syria, Jordan and other attacking Muslim Arab armies who swore to annihilate the Jewish State. This incident was called the "Liberty Affair".

I was puzzled for a few minutes as to why the Chicago Tribune had devoted a front page with picture, headline, above-the-fold story, plus a full two page spread inside to an event that occurred 40 years ago. The title of the article was "New Revelation in Attack on American Spy Ship". As I read it, there were no new "revelations" but another dredging up of all the emotional interchanges of the time as if it happened yesterday.

The story was replete with carefully selected, provocative photos that the Trib is famous for which are selected to indict and convince the readers that what follows in loaded words must be true.

But, Why Now? Why was the Trib selected as first point media source to anger the American public and Congress against Israel?

THE MOTIVE: Lynching-of-Israel Conference "Middle East Summit" set for November 15th

To begin with I concluded that the timing was selected to build up a head of steam before the Lynching-of-Israel Conference "Middle East Summit" set for November 15th at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Its location was carefully selected so those who would protest would easily be kept out-of-sight and out-of-sound to the delegates.

Israel is set to be pilloried and forced to abandon more than half of Jerusalem to Arafat’s terrorists who are now in the hands of Arafat’s 40 year operations and bag man, companion and financier, Mahmoud Abbas (aka Abu Mazen). During this "Lynching" Israel is also supposed to surrender a large stretch of her ancestral heartland, 100% of Judea and Samaria. This Land, given by G-d to the Jewish people in perpetuity, will shortly be converted into an excellent missile firing position as has been happening in Gaza since 16,000 Jewish men, women and children were evicted from their homes, farms, schools, synagogues and cemeteries two years ago. The targets will be the rest of Israel’s population, 80% of which resides in the crowded coastal areas - plus the Ben Gurion International Airport.

Then President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and James Baker III (former Sec. State) also want to reward Syria’s Bashar Al Assad by forcing Israel to abandon the Golan Heights where Israel carefully observes Syria’s army now - with sophisticated electronics. This is the same Syria which presently is acting as the doorway for Muslim Terrorists (euphemistically called "insurgents") to enter Iraq to kill American soldiers and Iraqi civilians and soldiers.

They want Israel to give up Israel’s current natural invasion barrier called the Jordan Valley. Japan has offered to assist by creating an agricultural, industrial Park (using Israel’s water) for the Muslim Arab Palestinians to grow desirable fruits and vegetables which will be shipped to Jordan who will then transship to the Arab States and Europe. Everyone benefits. The Arab Palestinians will have lucrative work; the Jordanians will benefit financially; the Arab States and Europe will get bumper early crops of garden foods and Israel will lose more of her scarce water resources, land for living and growing food and - the long natural invasion barrier that now protects her longest Eastern border.

This planned slicing up of the Jewish State may give you a partial idea of why the Trib may have been tasked by the State Department and White House to bash Israel at this particular time.

Clearly, the Tribune attack was in synchronization with the planned "Lynching" group assembled by Condi Rice. This November 15th Lynching Kangaroo Court consists of Israel’s most dedicated enemies. To complete the full picture, you must know who will act as the inquisitors in this Kangaroo Court, denials notwithstanding.

First, are the creators of the so-called "Quartet" who supposedly created George W. Bush’s "Road Map". In the Quartet is the "Captain", that is the pro-Arab U.S. State Department fronted by Rice with James Baker prompting from the background, with the highly likely Jewish advisors of Baker’s former team, telling him of the weak spots in the Jewish leadership. The U.S. State Department has always been known for trying to abort the birth of the State of Israel in 1947-8 and ever since, to manipulate its speedy demise.

Then there is the U.N. (United Nations) well known for continually voting condemnations of Israel but, never condemning the Terrorist Nations and those who support those hostile to the Western countries freedoms and democracy.

The E.U. (European Union) will be there and many of them have been known as those nations who collaborated with Adolph Hitler by turning their Jews over to the Nazi Gestapo for liquidation. Of course, Russia plays its role - but, its history cannot be hidden. Russia continually persecuted its Jews with pogroms, forcing the Jews to live in abject poverty with high taxes and in the "Pale of Settlement" on poor land. Now Russia is said to be arming Iran with nuclear technology and Syria with weapons.

Then you have the "Quartet" which while it contains the U.S. State Department, the U.N., the E.U. and Russia, it operates with its own agenda. In addition, this amalgam includes all the Arab Muslim nations whose oil riches control many of those other countries who might have been neutral and more fair without that manipulation. Here we must include U.S. and European vested interests plus the U.N. leaders who embezzled billions in the oil-for-food scam.

Tony Blair has been appointed by the Quartet to act a high manipulator, and IF you are aware of past British attitudes toward the Jews of Israel, you will understand his appointment.

The Arab League, Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia will be invited and will attend IF Rice can squeeze out "Pre-Concessions" from the weak, corrupt, craven Quisling Ehud Olmert, they too will come. Naturally, Abu Mazen, head of Fatah (including the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades, Tanzim and other Terror organizations left over from Arafat’s days) will come.

All of the above band of cut throats are being assembled by Bush and Rice to hack Israel into smaller bits, denials notwithstanding.

THE LIBERTY AFFAIR: WHY NOW? WHAT DID THE TRIB LEAVE OUT?

As for the USS Liberty, the Trib and its author John Crewdson leave out a few major details. In June 1967 there was a violent life-and-death battle taking place all across the Sinai Desert, the Golan Heights and in Jerusalem after King Hussein (unwisely) attacked. Egypt’s Gamal Abdul Nasser and Syria’s Hafez al Assad had repeatedly threatened Israel with annihilation.

Many in the U.S. Arabist Section of the State Department didn’t want Egypt to lose the battle or, at least, they wanted to minimize Egypt’s defeat. All during this time an electronic spy ship was monitoring Israeli and Egyptian communication between tank forces and aircraft. That ship should not have been in a hot battle area because there was a significant risk to itself and crew. Sending unmarked surveillance teams into war zones is a risk nations take for whatever their own reasons and motives. They generally do not shout out their identity - mostly because all know an enemy can change flags and markings - depending on who they are trying to trick.

There was concern discussed at the time that this spy ship (the Trib does use that term right out front in its banner headline) was picking up battle information and positions in order to transfer them to Egypt. The claim then was that the Liberty looked like an Egyptian spy ship which was denied in follow-on arguments. Many of Israel’s "Friends and Enemies" knew that the plan was to defeat and occupy Israel with an accompanying slaughter. It was not anticipated that Israel could possible defeat Egypt, Syria and Jordan in a three-front war.

However, precautions were taken to insure that Israel’s adversaries would have the benefit of additional intelligence so they could maneuver and outflank Israel’s armored forces in the Sinai and Golan Heights. Betraying a friend and ally needed deep cover lest it became public knowledge, affecting politics back in the countries who decided that it would be better for all concerned if Israel were defeated by Muslim Arab countries and the Jewish State simply disappeared. Naturally, there was to be a highly publicized follow-on mission of rescue of those left alive in Israel. That’s called a "Win-Win" in Intelligence parlance. Israel was not supposed to win that war and, no doubt, disappointed her detractors at the State Department.

IF the spy ship was picking up Israeli battle plans and transferring them to Egypt, then they had clearly taken sides and would be viewed as a hostile force - regardless of who they were. The NSA (National Security Agency) was never asked to release its Intel tapes, if indeed they were receiving and transferring battle info to Egypt. Each side denied responsibility and its doubtful the real story will ever be told - except for a self-serving manipulation like the Tribune screed.

The hit on the Liberty was finally judged a mistake in identification and the matter was officially closed. However, there were those who dedicated their lives to keeping the matter alive - as seen in this Tribune blast which used statements from sailors on that ship who themselves were not ever in the intelligence loop of "need-to-know" information of the actual mission. No doubt, the argument of fault will continue but, the timing of the Chicago Tribune assault and the placement and date of the coming Mid East Summit is more than a little suspicious.

THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE ASSAULT

The Tribune assault has several roles to play. First, it is intended to frighten American Jews into silence before the November Lynch Party. The location of the Summit is the U.S. Naval Academy at Anapolis. Do you think that is a coincidence? I don’t.

Second, it must also silence AIPAC so that the American lobby for Israel will not lobby Congress to interfere with the disassembling of Israel. The process of shutting down AIPAC began a few years ago when a sting operation was approved by Bush and Rice regarding "transfer of information". The "sting" involved a so-called illegal leak to AIPAC about Iran's transfer of arms to Syria - something that the State Department apparently didn't want Israel to know.

Third, the timing: Simultaneous with the Jewish community’s biggest meeting of the year, the UJC (United Jewish Communities) General Assembly had already been scheduled for at least a year to be held on November 13-15th in Nashville, Tennessee. Simultaneity is not coincidental. American, Israeli and World Jewry will have to choose which event to attend. Presumably, the Bush Administration will be speaking at this forum to convince the Jewish attendees that giving up Jerusalem, ‘et al’ will somehow guarantee that the Muslim Arab Palestinian Terrorists, the Arab nations and the radical Islamists will cease terror. It is expected that, while Israel is being dissected in Maryland, the Jews attending their G.A. in Tennessee will be applauding the Bush speeches in Annapolis which will be promising "Peace in Our Time".

I have little doubt that we’ll see a sequence of other flag-ship journals and lesser lights picking up the story as it if were today’s hot news. I expect to see a lot of S..t. thrown against the wall to see what sticks before the November 15th lynching by Bush, Rice and Baker against Israel. As for the European Media, they never need a reason to bash Israel but, Condi’s Lynch Party will be attractive to up the condemnations.

The State Department seems to have pulled out all the stops to insure the victim (Israel) will, indeed, be lynched and left twisting in the wind at the November Surprise. That has been the State Department’s goal since 1947 and has not stopped or faltered a day since. While Rice is the "talking head" for Bush, look for James Baker as the "masked" arranger slightly off in the shadows advising Rice how to best get at the Jews - as he did in the failed "Road Map" plan.

I speculated as to whether this Tribune attack was the "Kick-off Campaign of Propaganda" but, then remembered CNNs Christiane Amanpour’s spectacular earlier series "The Warriors of God".which was aired twice in August 2007. Christiane, herself an Iranian, opened the series by positioning Israel as the baseless attacker of those poor innocent Palestinians. Perhaps the Amanpour series was the real "Kick-off" of State’s preparation to Lynch Israel. CNN is sort of like the New York Times of TV and well connected to State. Recall how CNN was allowed to stay in Iraq by Saddam Hussein in 1991 while all the other TV outlets were kicked out during the first Gulf War when Hussein attacked Kuwait.

They really pulled open the manhole cover to this sewer and the stink of managed news is smelling up to the ceiling.

Shocking…Yet another State Department Arabist takes Jews to task for wanting to survive the Foggy Folks’ less than friendly--if not downright hostile--“peace” (of the grave) plans. We’ll return to this later…First, imagine, for one moment, that the entire territory of the United States was reduced to the size of New Jersey.Rather than being separated from any real or potential enemies by thousands of miles of oceans as it formerly was, this new, constricted America is still surrounded by the rest of the same territory that was the old America…but that land now consists of enemies dedicated to mini-America’s destruction.Next, picture that the animosity of the enemies America faces has nothing to do with its size --for America is now indeed tiny--but is based on their belief that Americans have no historical or political right whatsoever to the land. Our enemies, instead, claim all of the area--including America--as purely their own patrimony.Next, picture that mini-America with 6 million Americans, surrounded by hundreds of millions of enemies who would like to have it for dinner, has a powerful, friendly nation across the sea from which it gets most of its support--militarily, financially, and so forth.The problem is that America’s friend also has deep connections to America’s far more numerous and wealthy enemies. The friend wishes that America would be more “pliable” so that it could further its standing with them for many reasons--not the least being the enormous amount of money being made by government employees, courtesy of those above deep connections, as they move through the revolving doors of government and business. There are, of course, strategic and other reasons as well.The dilemma here is that just supporting a viable, independent America is enough to make America’s enemies its powerful friend’s enemies as well.Okay…Welcome back to reality. The above, of course, is the relationship between Israel and America reversed.On August 10th, an Israeli newspaper quoted former Prime Minister, now Defense Minister, General Ehud Barak, as saying that Israel would not withdraw from the West Bank before finding a solution to Palestinian Arab rocket attacks, "which will take between three to five years."Commenting on others’ wishful thinking about a “quick peace,” Barak then added, "the Israel public reacts sanely in not believing such fantasies ... for it is not possible to envisage a separation with the Palestinians before finding the means to protect the population against shootings" from rockets or missiles.Consider, please, that after Israel totally withdrew from Gaza--while it was still under the “moderate” Abbas’ control--towns in southern Israel proper were hit non-stop by Arab rockets, mortars, and so forth.Consider also that the Arab intifada was launched under Fatah’s watch--not Hamas’--and the Arafatians did nothing to stop the blown buses, teen nightclubs, restaurants, and other barbarism deliberately targeting the most innocent. Not only did they not stop it, but they were often a party to the atrocities themselves.Next, think about this…When it comes to the subject of a Jewish Israel, there is no disagreement between Fatah and Hamas on this subject--despite the whitewashing and cover-ups that the State Department has been doing in Arafat’s and his successors’ names for decades now.So, Israel is faced with a Hamas openly calling for its destruction and Abbas’ Fatah Arafatians adhering to their destruction in phases and Trojan Horse strategies for Israel‘s elimination.Abbas has never changed the platform he ran on for Israel’s destruction (but by “more acceptable” means), and the schools, mosques, camps, television stations, newspapers, maps, websites, and so forth look no different than Hamas’ when it comes to the acceptance of a Jewish State as a permanent neighbor. On the contrary, Israel’s disappearance or non-existence is the perpetual message in all of Fatah’s outletsAfter Abbas’ Fatah got the boot from Gaza recently, it then had to start the sweet talk up once again to gain additional American support.Since it doesn’t take much to get the Foggy Folks to squeeze the Jews ( they opposed Israel‘s rebirth in the first place and have often been nasty to its mere basic interests ever since), the full court press was indeed short in the coming, with a weak-kneed Israeli leadership bearing the brunt. And this time, Israel’s alleged “best friend,” President George W. Bush, was leading the charge. With a long term good prognosis for Iraq not likely, Dubya would like a success he could point to in the region as he leaves office. The birth of Arab state # 22--and second, not first, Arab state in “ Palestine” (Jordan sitting on about 80% of the original 1920 Mandate)--would do nicely…for many reasons.Enter Ehud Barak…Ironically, this is the same guy whom President Carter--aiming to redeem his own presidency--squeezed at Camp David and Taba not long ago to give away the store. Luckily, Arafat refused.But, here we are again a bit later--yet with virtually the same scenario.Abbas has so far proven to be nothing more than Arafat in a suit. He too “condemns“--wink, wink--blowing Jews apart while funding those who do so and having his own Fatah folks take part. He plays the good cop/bad cop game well with State Department assistance.And for such “moderation”--he still refuses to give up on his demand to overwhelm Israel with millions of alleged “returning” jihadist refugees, talks only of a hudna /cease fire, refuses to confront Arabs who terrorize Jews, and so forth-- Prime Minister Olmert (the other Ehud) & Co. have turned over arms and military equipment, released terrorists, given up territory, provided funds, further exposed Jews to Arab terror, etc., etc., etc.When Barak commented that Israel should not be rushed to a virtual retreat to its miniscule1949 armistice lines existence before it developed better means to deal with attacks that will likely be launched from new territory scheduled to be turned over to Abbas, he was simply stating the facts that the most naïve of the naïve could understand.What Defense Minister anywhere faced with such realities Barak is confronted with would plan differently?Would America be so trusting of an enemy with such a proven deadly, rejectionist record?Well, after Barak responded as we’ve read above, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (she already has an oil tanker named for her…all hail the petrobuck!…just ask, among many others, former Secretary of State James Baker) had her man at Foggy Bottom do the typical Arabist dirty work.Tom Casey issued an insulting diplomatic slap calling Barak’s comments “overly pessimistic.” Can you ever recall a Foggy spokesperson issuing such a slap to one of the feudal Arab oil despots--even after 9/11 and all of those Saudi homicide bombers?Not good for business…if ya know what I mean. Again, many a Foggy Folk and other government official has eventually benefited from the Arab oil spigot…including the Bush family.Finally, read General Barak’s comments again.Where’s the pessimism? He is a seasoned Israeli military leader who knows his enemies far better than any Foggy Arabist does.Would Casey allow Dulles Airport, the White House, Pentagon, and such to come within range of rocket fire from an enemy dedicated to our destruction and which has constantly launched missiles at us in the past--even after extensive unilateral concessions were made to them? How about, perhaps, Casey’s own kids--would he bare their necks so optimistically given the nature of the enemy Israel faces?What evidence does Casey provide that the Fatah leopard will change its murderous spots? We’ve heard the empty sweet Arafatian tune before. Excuse after excuse after excuse has been made for them.Meanwhile, Abbas’ boys have been reported to be currently renegotiating deals with Hamas and paying Hamasniks with money recently released to Abbas by Olmert under Washington‘s pressure. What evidence does Casey have of a Fatahstan which will fully recognize a Jewish Israel and finally change its charter which calls for Israel’s destruction? Or a Fatahstan which will ever teach acceptance instead of the joys of martyrdom to its children?None. None at all…But the Jews, in a nation the size of New Jersey, will continue to be squeezed anyway, and this time it won’t be just places like Sderot in the Israeli Negev under fire, but Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and most of Israel’s population and industry which are located in Israel’s narrow 9-16 mile wide waist that will be under attack.Realism, Mr. Casey…not pessimism.And certainly not optimism. Yet, only if the latter was truly available, would the core concessions Israel is being forced to make make any sense.As many of us have written, this whole thing has the stench of Munich 1938 about it, with Chamberlain’s sellout of the Czechs to Hitler to supposedly achieve peace for our time.Unfortunately, none of this matters right now with the folks running the show in Washington.So, what will it take to wake the Israeli public up from its dangerous slumber?A great Hebrew sage, Rabbi Hillel, proclaimed a few thousand years ago, “if I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”Israel has bent over backwards to make critical concessions to those who still seek its destruction anyway.It’s time for the first part of Hillel’s message to at last be taken seriously.
