British spy chiefs have grave doubts that Iran has mothballed its nuclear weapons programme, as a US intelligence report claimed last week, and believe the CIA has been hoodwinked by Teheran.

The timing of the CIA report has also provoked fury in the British Government, where officials believe it has undermined efforts to impose tough new sanctions on Iran and made an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities more likely.
The security services in London want concrete evidence to allay concerns that the Islamic state has fed disinformation to the CIA.
The report used new evidence - including human sources, wireless intercepts and evidence from an Iranian defector - to conclude that Teheran suspended the bomb-making side of its nuclear programme in 2003. But British intelligence is concerned that US spy chiefs were so determined to avoid giving President Bush a reason to go to war - as their reports on Saddam Hussein's weapons programmes did in Iraq - that they got it wrong this time.
A senior British official delivered a withering assessment of US intelligence-gathering abilities in the Middle East and revealed that British spies shared the concerns of Israeli defence chiefs that Iran was still pursuing nuclear weapons.

The source said British analysts believed that Iranian nuclear staff, knowing their phones were tapped, deliberately gave misinformation. "We are sceptical. We want to know what the basis of it is, where did it come from? Was it on the basis of the defector? Was it on the basis of the intercept material? They say things on the phone because they know we are up on the phones. They say black is white. They will say anything to throw us off.
"It's not as if the American intelligence agencies are regarded as brilliant performers in that region. They got badly burned over Iraq."
A US intelligence source has revealed that some American spies share the concerns of the British and the Israelis. "Many middle- ranking CIA veterans believe Iran is still committed to producing nuclear weapons and are concerned that the agency lost a number of its best sources in Iran in 2004," the official said.
The Foreign Office is studying a new text of a third United Nations Security Council resolution that would impose tough travel bans on regime figures and penalise banks that do business with Iran.
But diplomats say the chances of winning Chinese and Russian support for the move are in freefall. A Western diplomat said: "It's created a lot of difficulties because of the timing, just as we were about to go for a third resolution."
Bruce Reidel, who spent 25 years on the Middle East desks at the CIA and the National Security Council, said: "By going public they have embarrassed our friends, particularly the British and the Israelis. They have given our foes insights into our most secret intelligence and taken most of the options off the table."
Ephraim Sneh, until recently Israel's deputy minister of defence, warned that military action would be the only option if the world community did not institute robust sanctions. "No one can rule out with high confidence that somewhere in Iran, 70 times the size of Israel, there is one lab working on the weapons programme," Mr Sneh told The Sunday Telegraph.
"[Military action] is not a desired option; it is a last resort. That's why sanctions are so important. We have to urge the international community to be serious about sanctions and to take necessary measures to defend the civilian population."

London Cartoon Protesters Jailed for a Total of 22 Years

LONDON, 19 July 2007 — Four young British Muslims were yesterday jailed for a total of 22 years at the Old Bailey for their role in a protest outside the Danish Embassy in Sloane Street on Feb. 3, 2006 against cartoons depicting and satirizing the Prophet Muhammed.
Website designer Mizanur Rahman, 24, of Palmers Green; British Telecoms IT technician Umran Javed, 27, from Birmingham; and Abdul Muhid, 24, of Whitechapel were each jailed for six years for soliciting to murder after urging the crowd or carrying placards with threats, including “Bomb Bomb UK”; “Be prepared for the real holocaust”; “Osama is on his way”; and referring to British soldiers in Iraq: “We want to see their blood running in the streets of Baghdad and them coming home in body bags.”
A fourth man, Abdul Saleem, 32, from Poplar in east London, was jailed for four years on a single charge of stirring up racial hatred at the protest in February 2006.
The sentences were handed out as a dozen or so supporters of the men sat in the public gallery. Outside the court building, however, there were some 50 or so ‘Islamist’ demonstrators, many of them women in full black burkas covered from head to toe. The latter’s venom in their message of hate against the British establishment could not have been more evident. They waved placards reading: “British Police Go to Hell” and “Muslims Under Siege.”
But the warning to the extremists of all colors and creed who want to spread messages of hate was loud and clear from Sir Ken Macdonald, director of public prosecutions: “Terrorism attacks our way of life and incitement can make a very real contribution to it. We shall continue to take incitement very seriously and prosecute it robustly where there is enough evidence for us to do so.”
The Common Serjeant of London, Judge Brian Barker, said the words of the four convicted had been designed to encourage murder and terrorism; and that none of the placards or speeches mention the cartoons, which had never been published in the British media. “Everybody is entitled to freedom and protection under the law and no one is entitled to urge the perverted use of ideology to propagate destruction, distress and death,” he declared.
“The freedoms of speech and assembly have long been jealously guarded by our laws, but with freedom comes respect and responsibility — none of which was demonstrated by you and the hardcore of your fellow protesters, demonstrating in February last year. Six months after the London bombings you subjected the multicultural citizens of London to a constant barrage of hatred and intolerance through your thoroughly offensive placards and speeches by three of you,” the judge added.
The convictions arose from the aftermath of an incident when about 300 protesters marched from the Central London Mosque in Regent’s Park to the Danish Embassy in February last year after cartoons satirizing the Prophet Muhammad were published in newspapers in Denmark and other European countries.
The men denied harboring extremist views and said they were simply following others rather than leading the protests.
Meanhwile, in another development yesterday, three Muslim men were arrested by Greater Manchester Police counter-terrorism officers under terrorism laws after receiving information about a “potential threat.” The three are being held at a police station in the Stockport Road district of Longsight, Manchester. A fourth man was detained under immigration laws.

We welcome the courageous decision of the National Union of Journalists to boycott Israeli goods (Letters, April 23). Given Israel's contempt for international law, with the complicity of the US and UK governments, pressure has to be increased by civil society if justice is to be achieved. A boycott of Israeli goods is a legitimate form of grassroots action and is particularly appropriate as Israel is destroying the Palestinian economy. Such a boycott has been called for by Israeli peace organisations.

As a result of its illegal occupation, Israel is able to flood the Palestinian market with its products, while preventing Palestinian farmers from growing and trading their own. We believe Israel's actions betray Jewish ethical traditions - the cutting down of olive and fruit trees is prohibited by Jewish law. The continuing occupation and exploitation of Palestinian land is a major obstacle to peace for Israelis and Arabs alike which has global implications for world peace.
